Barrier Pipe

A barrier pipe is a type of plastic pipe used in heating systems. The pipe is manufactured with a barrier that prevents oxygen from penetrating the material and entering the water system, which could cause corrosion. The 'barrier' is usually a resin material bonded between the outer and inner layer of the pipe itself.

EX/AL/PEX multilayer pipes use aluminium as the barrier. The aluminium is either layer welded or butt welded. Butt-welding improves their resistance to both internal pressure and to the stress generated when the pipes are bent during installation.

In the butt-welded multilayer pipes, the welding line of the aluminium layer is the strongest point of the layer. We would like to bring to your attention the fact that there are other multilayer pipes on the market in which the aluminium layer is overlapped and welded by an ultrasonic system. It is our opinion that in this kind of multilayer pipe, the welding line is the weakest point of the aluminium layer, leading to inferior performance in terms of resistance to internal pressure and to the stress generated when the pipes are bent during installation.

Please Note: If you require cross-linked multilayer pipes you should ensure that they bear the marking PEX/AL/PEX. Please be careful, since multi-layer pipes that do not bear the marking PEX/AL/PEX are probably made from inferior grade polyethylene's.

PEX-b EVOH Oxygen Barrier underfloor heating pipe (Ethylene Vinyl Alcohol, commonly abbreviated to EVOH) is a formal copolymer of ethylene and vinyl alcohol. Its primary purpose is to provide barrier properties, primarily as an oxygen barrier.
