What are Air Source Heat Pumps?

Air Source Heat Pump

Air Source Heat Pumps work by converting the energy of the outside air into heat. This creates a comfortable temperature inside the house as well as supplying energy for the hot water system. As with all ground source heat pumps, air source heat pump models are most efficient when supplying low temperature systems such as underfloor heating. Please read the information below or submit your submit your building plans Here.

Heat Pump - Air SourceThe efficiency of an air source heat pump is measured in Coefficient of Performance (CoP). A CoP of 4 means that for every kilowatt of electricity put in, you get 4 kilowatts of energy in the form of warm water. The flow temperature of the warm water is typically between 35°C and 45°C; much lower than achieved by a domestic boiler. The units are perfectly capable of generating higher temperatures but the CoP suffers meaning the economic and ecological benefits may be affected. Keeping the temperature at the lower end of the scale keeps the system operating at maximum efficiency.

An Air Source Heat Pump should cover the heating requirements of a well-insulated property in all but the most extreme conditions. When used in combination with an immersion heater both heating and hot water needs should be met, the immersion heater boosting water temperatures when necessary. An air source heat pump working efficiently can reduce energy consumption for heating by up to 50% when compared to conventional heating systems.

Easy installation - Air Source Heat Pumps

With no need for ground loops or boreholes eco hometec Air Source Heat Pumps can be used for most applications. These can include large commercial projects or social housing where land space is limited. eco hometec Air Source Heat Pumps can be used as a complete solution for room heating using the same distribution system as a ground source heat pump or a traditional system. eco hometec Air Source Heat Pumps are ideal for very tight spaces and within a low carbon design or within the design of a building which has large internal spaces such as audience halls and public places.

Low capital and installation costs - Air Source Heat Pumps

The benefits of eco hometec Air Source Heat Pumps are similar to ground source heat pumps. Both systems need either the use of storage or external fuel. The systems use exclusively electricity which eliminates the need for a gas connection or storage of oil/solid fuel.

eco hometec Air Source Heat Pumps present considerable installation advantages over ground source heat pumps. eco hometec Air Source Heat Pumps do not require any pipe work to be buried underground. The cost of excavations, plastic pipes, glycol, manifold and manifold chambers along with labour saving and plant costs is considerably less.

The disruption excavations cause, to trees and other wildlife is prevented and the cost of making good excavations and replanting is also saved.

Finally the amount of energy available from an area of land into which the ground source pipes have been buried is not guaranteed. If the area of land is too small or unsuitable or the energy extracted is greater than can be recovered naturally then the ground temperature will go down.

In these situations the glycol temperature leaving the ground and entering the heat pump will be lower than predicted, often little above freezing. This will have adverse effects on the efficiency of the heat pump. The CoP instead of being 4-5 may be as low as 1-3. The heat pump will use more electricity and the running costs will be considerably higher.

A ground Source Heat Pump collector part of the installation, the design, location, size and installation of the ground loops is left to third parties and contractors. If any part under performs then the performance of the ground source heat pump and the amount of electricity used will be adversely affected.

With an eco hometec Air Source Heat Pump the CoP at a given air temperature has been verified at an independent testing house during approvals. As both parts of an eco hometec Air Source Heat Pump are manufactured parts the performance is guaranteed and consistent with published technical data.
